How to use: AI to WebP

About this tool

AI is the Adobe Illustrator format; since Illustrator 9 an AI file carries a PDF version of the artwork inside. WebP is a modern web picture format, smaller than PNG and JPG, with transparency.

This converter turns your AI file into WebP, the right choice for fast websites. The drawing is rendered as a WebP picture at 150 DPI by default – choose up to 300 DPI under “Options” for print; a transparent background stays transparent where WebP supports it. Which resolution should I choose?

150 DPI is right for screens and sharing; 300 DPI for printing; 72 DPI for small previews. The picture is drawn from the vectors at that resolution, so it is always sharp.

Which Illustrator files can be opened?

Every AI file saved with “Create PDF Compatible File” (the default since Illustrator 9), and old PostScript-based AI files. A file saved without the PDF part can only be opened by Illustrator itself – save it again with that option turned on.
