Fuel Cost Calculator for a Trip
Fuel or electricity a trip needs, its cost per trip, per person and per 100 km – l/100 km, km/l, mpg or kWh.
How to use: Fuel Cost Calculator
- 1 Enter the distance in kilometres or miles and tick round trip if you drive back.
- 2 Enter what your vehicle uses – for example 7.5 l/100 km, 30 mpg or 17 kWh/100 km for an electric car.
- 3 Enter the price per litre, gallon or kWh and pick the currency.
- 4 Read the fuel needed and the cost; split it between travellers to see the share of each.
About this tool
How much diesel does a 1,000 km drive to the coast take, and what will it cost? Enter the distance, what your car uses and the price at the pump: the calculator shows the litres (and gallons) you need, the total cost, the cost per 100 km and – if you share the ride – each person's part. Tick round trip and the way back is counted too.
It understands every common way of stating consumption: litres per 100 km as in Europe, kilometres per litre, and miles per gallon in US or UK gallons. Switch to an electric vehicle to use kWh per 100 km, km per kWh or miles per kWh with a price per kWh. Change the unit and the consumption you entered is converted, so you can also use it to compare l/100 km and mpg.
For petrol, diesel and LPG the calculator also shows the CO₂ that leaves the exhaust (about 2.31 kg per litre of petrol, 2.68 kg per litre of diesel). Everything is calculated in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
How is the fuel for a trip calculated?
Fuel = distance × consumption ÷ 100 when the consumption is in litres per 100 km. 1,000 km at 7.5 l/100 km needs 75 litres; at 1.60 per litre that is 120.00. Other units (km/l, mpg) are converted to l/100 km first.
How do I convert mpg to l/100 km?
Divide 235.21 by US mpg, or 282.48 by UK mpg: 30 mpg (US) is 7.84 l/100 km, 30 mpg (UK) is 9.42 l/100 km. Pick the unit in the calculator and it converts the value for you.
What consumption should I enter?
The value from your trip computer or from your last fill-ups is the most honest. Manufacturer (WLTP) figures are usually 10–20 % lower than real driving; a loaded car, a roof box, a caravan or motorway speeds raise consumption noticeably.
Can I calculate the cost for an electric car?
Yes. Switch to Electric and enter kWh per 100 km (or km/kWh, mi/kWh) and the price per kWh. Charging losses of around 10 % are included if you use the consumption measured at the plug rather than the car display.
How much CO₂ does my trip produce?
Burning a litre of petrol releases about 2.31 kg of CO₂, a litre of diesel about 2.68 kg and a litre of LPG about 1.51 kg. The calculator multiplies these factors by the fuel needed.
