About this tool
A typo in a form, a date that has changed, a field that needs filling in, a passage to highlight for a colleague – small changes to a PDF should not need expensive desktop software. This editor shows the document page by page with a toolbar right above the page, on a computer as well as on a phone.
“Edit text” changes what is already there: tap a line, and it is covered with white and replaced by an editable copy in the same place and size. “Add text” puts new text anywhere, in any colour and size, bold if needed. The highlighter marks passages in yellow (or another colour), the pen draws freehand notes and arrows, shapes frame important parts, and the whiteout tool hides what should not be seen. Images such as a logo, a stamp or a photo can be placed and resized with their proportions kept. Every step can be undone.
All of this happens in your browser – the PDF is never uploaded. Your changes are added on top of the original pages, so the rest of the document stays exactly as it was. Whiteout only covers content; to remove confidential information for good, use Redact PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change text that is already in the PDF?
Yes. Choose “Edit text” and tap the line: it is covered with white and an editable copy appears in its place. The new text uses a standard font, so it can look slightly different from the original typeface.
Why can I not edit the text of a scanned document?
A scan is a picture of the page and contains no real text. Cover the old words with Whiteout and write the new ones with Add text.
Is whited-out content really deleted?
No, it is only covered, and the text underneath can still be copied out of the file. To remove sensitive information for good, use Redact PDF.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The tools sit above the page, and you place, move and resize everything with your fingers.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The document is edited in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
