About this tool
Before a contract, a court document, a bank statement or a medical report is shared, personal data often has to disappear. A black rectangle drawn in an ordinary editor is not enough: the text underneath stays in the file and can be copied out. This tool removes it for real – every page with a redaction is saved as an image with the boxes burnt in, so the hidden text, images and links on that page no longer exist in the PDF.
Mark areas by dragging over the page, or let the tool find them: type a name or number, or use one click to find all e-mail addresses, phone numbers, IBANs or dates on every page. Each match gets a box that you can still move, resize or remove. The boxes are slightly transparent while you work, so you can see exactly what they cover; in the result they are solid black (or white).
Pages without redactions are copied unchanged. You can also remove the document's title and author information. Everything happens in your browser – the document you are trying to protect is never uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is the covered text really removed?
Yes. Pages with boxes are saved as images with the boxes drawn in, so the text under them no longer exists in the file and cannot be copied or searched.
Why is the text on redacted pages no longer selectable?
Because those pages are now images – that is what makes the redaction safe. Pages without boxes keep their selectable text.
Does the search find text in scanned documents?
No. A scan contains only a picture of the text; draw the boxes by hand there.
Which quality should I choose?
200 DPI is sharp for reading and printing. Use 300 DPI for small print, 150 DPI for a smaller file.
Is my document uploaded?
No. The redaction is done in your browser, so the sensitive document never leaves your device.
