About this tool

An interrupted download, a broken USB stick, an e-mail program that mangled an attachment – and the PDF suddenly shows “file is damaged and could not be repaired” or opens with blank pages. Often most of the content is still there; only the file's structure is broken.

This tool reads the file in two independent ways. The pages it can read are shown right away, so you see what can be recovered. Repairing then copies every page with its text, fonts and images into a new, cleanly structured PDF; a broken cross-reference table, wrong offsets or a missing end of file are no obstacle. A page that cannot be copied is re-drawn from what can still be displayed. Before you get the file, it is opened and checked; if that fails, every page is rebuilt as an image so you still end up with a readable document.

The damaged file never leaves your computer: the repair runs in your browser. Files that are badly truncated may be missing their last pages – no tool can bring back data that is no longer in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Which problems can be repaired?

Broken cross-reference tables, wrong offsets, missing file endings, damaged objects on some pages and files that open with errors. Pages whose data is completely missing cannot be recovered.

Is the text still selectable after repair?

Yes, for pages that could be copied. Only pages rebuilt as images (shown in the result) lose selectable text; you can run OCR on them afterwards.

What if the file does not open here at all?

Then too little of the PDF is left to read. Try downloading or copying the original again, or ask the sender for a new copy.

Can I repair a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. Enter it when asked; the repaired file has no password.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The repair runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
