How to use: Signature Background Remover

  1. 1 Sign on white paper with a dark pen and take a photo or scan.
  2. 2 Choose the photo: the paper and shadows disappear automatically.
  3. 3 Pick the ink colour (black, blue or as photographed) and adjust ink detection if lines are missing or the paper shows.
  4. 4 Save as PNG and insert the signature into your document.

About this tool

Signing a document digitally is often just a matter of placing an image of your signature on it, but a photo of a signature on paper has a grey, uneven background that looks wrong on a white page. This tool turns that photo into the signature alone: clean ink lines on a transparent background.

Uneven light and phone shadows are evened out first by comparing each pixel with the paper around it, so the background disappears even in a dim photo. Ink detection is automatic and can be tuned: keep faint pen strokes or only the darkest lines. The ink can be recoloured to pure black, blue or dark blue (as with a ballpoint pen) or left as photographed; edges are smoothed and thin lines can be made bolder. The result is trimmed to the signature with a small margin.

Because a signature is sensitive, this matters most here: the photo is processed entirely by your browser and never uploaded. The same steps work for stamps, hand-drawn sketches and notes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the best result?

Use a dark pen on plain white paper, photograph straight from above in daylight without flash, and fill most of the photo with the signature.

Some lines are missing or broken. What can I do?

Move ink detection towards "Include faint lines", or use "Make lines bolder" to thicken thin strokes.

Grey dots from the paper are visible. How do I remove them?

Move ink detection towards "Dark lines only" so only the darkest ink is kept.

How do I put the signature into a Word or PDF document?

Save as PNG and insert it as a picture; the transparent background lets it sit on the signature line. In PDF editors use "add image" or "signature from image".

Is my signature uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser; the photo and the result stay on your device.
