About this tool
Typing text from a photo is slow: a page of a book, a receipt, a sign, a slide, a screenshot of an error message or a scanned letter. Optical character recognition (OCR) reads the letters in the picture and turns them into text you can copy, edit, search and translate.
This tool uses Tesseract, a well-known open-source OCR engine, running in your browser as WebAssembly. It recognises printed text in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian (Latin script), with special letters such as č, ć, đ, š, ž, ä, ö, ü, é and ç; English words can be recognised alongside the main language. A contrast clean-up helps with photos, small screenshots are enlarged automatically, and layout modes help with columns, single lines or scattered text. Several images can be read in one go.
The engine and language data are downloaded from this site only when you use the tool, and recognition happens on your device: your images are never uploaded. Handwriting and very stylised fonts are recognised poorly, as with most OCR.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the recognition?
Clear printed text in a sharp, straight photo or a screenshot is usually recognised very well. Blurry, tilted, dark or handwritten text gives more mistakes; the confidence value shows how sure the engine is.
Can it read handwriting?
Only very neat handwriting, and with many mistakes. Tesseract is made for printed text.
Which languages are supported?
English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian (Latin). Choose the language of the text; "Also recognise English words" helps with mixed texts.
Can I read text from a PDF?
Convert the PDF pages to images with PDF to Image first, then add those images here. If you can select text in the PDF, you can simply copy it.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Only the OCR engine and language data are downloaded from this site; your images are read on your device.
