About this tool

AVIF is the newest web image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It usually gives the smallest files at good quality and supports transparency. PNG is a lossless format: it stores every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for graphics, logos and screenshots.

Converting to PNG is useful for graphics, logos, screenshots and images you will edit further.

Files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. If a file is too large for your device, the tool explains why and asks before sending it anywhere. Hidden metadata such as the GPS location is not copied into the PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your own browser, so your files stay on your device. Only if a file is too large for your browser does the tool offer server processing, and it asks you first.

Will converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. PNG stores the pixels exactly, so no further quality is lost from now on, but it cannot restore detail that the AVIF compression already removed.

Is the image's metadata kept?

No. The PNG is created from the image pixels only, so EXIF data such as the GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied. This is useful before sharing images online.
