Your images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. If a file is too large for your browser or in a format it can’t handle, we ask before converting it on our server. About this tool
JPG (also called JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep files small and has no transparency. BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format: simple and widely readable, but files are large.
Converting to BMP is useful for older Windows programs, embedded devices and software that only reads BMP. BMP files are uncompressed or lightly compressed, so expect them to be much larger than the JPG.
Files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. If a file is too large for your device, the tool explains why and asks before sending it anywhere. Hidden metadata such as the GPS location is not copied into the BMP.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your own browser, so your files stay on your device. Only if a file is too large for your browser does the tool offer server processing, and it asks you first.
Will converting to BMP improve the quality?
No. BMP stores the pixels exactly, so no further quality is lost from now on, but it cannot restore detail that the JPG compression already removed.
Why is the BMP file so much bigger?
BMP stores images with little or no compression. That keeps full quality and makes the file easy to read for other programs, but the file is often many times larger than the JPG.
Is the image's metadata kept?
No. The BMP is created from the image pixels only, so EXIF data such as the GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied. This is useful before sharing images online.
