About this tool
ICO is the Windows icon format, also used for website favicons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes. JPG (also called JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep files small and has no transparency.
Converting to JPG is useful for sharing photos by email, uploading them to websites and forms, and opening them on any device. An ICO file can contain several sizes of the same icon; the tool converts the largest one. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
Files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. If a file is too large for your device, the tool explains why and asks before sending it anywhere. Hidden metadata such as the GPS location is not copied into the JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your own browser, so your files stay on your device. Only if a file is too large for your browser does the tool offer server processing, and it asks you first.
Will I lose quality converting ICO to JPG?
JPG uses lossy compression, so there is a small loss. At the default quality it is very hard to see; choose a higher quality for sharper files or a lower one for smaller files.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG doesn't support transparency. Transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default. Convert to PNG, WebP or AVIF if you need to keep transparency.
Which image of the icon is converted?
An ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes. The tool uses the largest, best-quality one.
Is the image's metadata kept?
No. The JPG is created from the image pixels only, so EXIF data such as the GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied. This is useful before sharing images online.
