Files to convert
Your images are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. If a file is too large for your browser or in a format it can’t handle, we ask before converting it on our server. The original is deleted right after conversion; the result is kept for 7 days for you to download, unless you delete it sooner. Privacy details
How to use: HEIC to ICO
- 1 Choose or drag in one or more HEIC files.
- 2 Choose which icon sizes to include; 16, 32 and 48 pixels are right for a website favicon.
- 3 Click Convert. The gear button next to a file opens its options; files you add afterwards are converted straight away.
- 4 Download the ICO files one by one, or all at once as a ZIP file.
About this tool
HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default. It is efficient but many websites, Windows programs and older devices cannot open it. ICO is the Windows icon format, also used for website favicons. One ICO file can hold the same icon in several sizes.
Converting to ICO is useful for website favicons and Windows icons. Safari reads HEIC directly; in other browsers the tool downloads a HEIC decoder once (about 0.8 MB) and runs it on your device. Photos are saved upright, as you see them on your phone. Images that aren't square are centred on a transparent square, so nothing is cut off or stretched.
Files are converted in your browser and are not uploaded to a server. If a file is too large for your device, the tool explains why and asks before sending it anywhere. Hidden metadata such as the GPS location is not copied into the ICO.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your own browser, so your files stay on your device. Only if a file is too large for your browser does the tool offer server processing, and it asks you first.
Will converting to ICO improve the quality?
No. ICO stores the pixels exactly, so no further quality is lost from now on, but it cannot restore detail that the HEIC compression already removed.
Will the ICO have a transparent background?
No. HEIC images have no transparency, so the ICO keeps the same solid background as the original.
Which sizes should a favicon have?
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 pixels are enough. For a Windows icon choose all sizes from 16 to 256 pixels. All chosen sizes are stored in one ICO file.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
On the iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. New photos are then saved as JPG; existing photos stay HEIC.
Is the image's metadata kept?
No. The ICO is created from the image pixels only, so EXIF data such as the GPS location, camera model and capture time is not copied. This is useful before sharing images online.
